Hepatitis D \u2013 a lesser-known but dangerous co-infection \u2013 has recently been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lanonc\/article\/PIIS1470-2045(25)00403-6\/abstract\">classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC)<\/a> as carcinogenic to humans, just like hepatitis B and C. Hepatitis D, which only affects individuals infected with the hepatitis B, is associated with a two- to six-fold higher risk of liver cancer compared to hepatitis B alone.<\/p><p>&#8220;Every 30 seconds, someone dies from a hepatitis-related severe liver disease or liver cancer. Yet we have the tools to stop hepatitis,\u201d said Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General.<\/p><p>In Africa, the burden is especially high. According to the WHO:<\/p><ul><li>Over 90 million people in sub-Saharan Africa are living with chronic hepatitis B or C.<\/li><li>Liver cancer is one of the top five cancer killers across the continent.<\/li><li>Hepatitis-related liver cancer often goes undetected until it\u2019s too late, leading to very poor survival outcomes.<\/li><\/ul><p>This is a ticking time bomb \u2014 but it\u2019s not unstoppable.<\/p><h3><strong>Know Your Status. Change the Future.<\/strong><\/h3><p>Here\u2019s the challenge: most people living with hepatitis don\u2019t know they\u2019re infected.
